In my attempt to save money for my big round the world trip I’ve managed to make plenty of sacrifices- I’ve stopped getting my hair dyed every three months, I’m working 30 hours a week while studying full time which leaves very limited time for fun, and I haven’t been going out nearly as often. However what still manages to be a huge part of my monthly expenses no matter how hard I try to exercise self control is food.

I’ve got a huge obsession with food- in fact half of my expenses in travel usually come down to my obsession with eating out and trying new food. I just can’t be one of those people that is happy making a basic meal in their hostel- if I’m in Paris I want to eat French food, if I’m in Italy I want to eat pizza, pasta and a truckload of gelato. Lucky (or perhaps unlucky) for me I live in one of the best cities for foodies.

Melbourne has an extremely diverse range of cuisines- name a country and a cuisine and you can probably find it somewhere in Melbourne. Outside of the usual suspects like Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek, Italian and Chinese, I’ve had Afghani, Taiwanese, Korean, African, Turkish and Moroccan. The benefit of eating these cuisines is they are some of the cheaper food you can get in Melbourne. Anyone that labels Australia as an extremely expensive destination for travel, particularly due to food expenses, never found the sushi rolls that average $2.20 a roll, or that bowl of Pho you can pick up at any Vietnamese restaurant for between $9-$12. The lower end, hole in the wall, restaurants offer amazing food and you would be hard pressed to spend more than $15, I’d say $10 is average. I’ll admit the quality and price of this food becomes better as you venture out of the CBD, but there are still many quality places in town. My advice would be to start with browsing urban spoon.

My plan is to justify my spending on eating out by providing you guys with a review every time I eat out. As always I’d love any recommendations from somewhere awesome you have eaten- whether in Melbourne or any other place in the world.
